  • Cross docking is a logistics process in which goods delivered to a facility are directly transferred from incoming transportation to an outbound truck. This requires no storage time in between getting delivered and leaving the storage facility. The process involves just-in-time (JIT) scheduling to synchronize deliveries with production schedules.

  • Cross docking is most often used for perishable or time sensitive goods. It’s ideal for direct transfer of goods and reduces storage time. This improves supply chain efficiency while reducing lead times and costs.

  • There are 2 types of cross docking: pre-distribution and post-distribution. With pre-distribution, there are pre-defined distribution instructions that are determined before the goods arrive to the facility. The final destination is determined in advance, as well as the planned immediate outbound transfer. Post-distribution cross docking is a logistics strategy in which goods are briefly kept at the cross docking facility while they are sorted and customer needs are identified. From there, they are shipped to the final destination.
